The daughter of the late King Hussein of Jordan and his wife Queen Alia, 40-year-old Princess Haya grew up treading a delicate line between the West and Islamic tradition.

Like many wealthy Jordanians, Haya was educated at secondary level in the UK, spending time at Badminton and Bryanston where she gained five A-levels before going on to read politics, philosophy and economics at St Hilda’s, Oxford.

After graduating, she returned to her first love, horses, and went on to become the first woman to represent Jordan in international equestrian sport, as well as being the only woman to win a medal in the Pan-Arab Equestrian Games.

In 2004, she wed His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, becoming his junior wife in the process. She shares her husband with his senior wife, Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum, his cousin and the mother of 12 of his children.

Haya herself has had children with Sheikh Mohammed, giving birth to their first child, Sheikha Al Jalila bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in 2007. They welcomed their second child, Sheikh Zayed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in 2012.

Although no longer an equestrienne herself, Princess Haya has thrown herself into charity work which she combines with motherhood and being a member of the International Olympic Committee.
